Sweet Baby Lou 40th Anniversary

THE FUTURENOWS

For our Fortieth Anniversary Celebration we decided to call back all the old hands, invite everyone and anyone who had ever been through the gleaming halls of Sweet Baby Lou. This led us to contact many people and led to many unsavory situations.

However in talks with former Exit Reason bassist Sean Nolan we learned of a much heralded side project THE FUTURENOWS. They led off the show with a three guitar mash up of campfire quality sing-a-longs that included some sweet jams like “The Dalai Lama Song” and more emotional material like “Tracks They Came.”

DAMON REEVES

We dug out this gem cover at the vault, displaying local artist Damon Reeves playing this Rolling Stones ditty at the Amherst Survival Center’s fundraiser in February held at the Pub on Main Street.

So We Got This Theory

ONE THEORY

Pioneer Valley area hard rockers ONE THEORY stopped by for this quiet acoustic set complete with bongo drums. The set was a departure for a band, that live usually lays on the distortion and overdrive to achieve the maximum metal needed to fill such venues like Maximum Capacity.

The boys played a handful of tunes including “Church,” obviously about a stripped, “Disappear” as well as a much-rehearsed version of Posion’s “Every Rose has its Thorn.” See the fruits of this collaboration below.

Oh So Horny

A WRENCH IN THE SPOKES

Two weeks ago Sweet Baby Lou set out on a voyage to sea, complete with sea shanties and of course there was no better choice for a rocking band on this voyage than UMass’ own ska-tastic A Wrench in the Spokes.

Here on our shared voyage the guys showcased some new material fresh from their newest album, “Drunk, High & Slightly Political.” The quartet is composed of frontmen; guitarist Brandon Rainville, bassist Jack Hawkins, drummer Mike Dunn, and trumpet player Ben Stein and are a self-described “ska-punk” band.

You can look out for the boys on April 25th where they are on the bill for this year’s Extravaganja to be held once again on the Amherst commons. The event also features such Sweet Baby Lou alums as The Alchemystics and other local notables like Shokazoba.

Will Brennan Strikes Again

WILLIAM BRENNAN + PAT DREW

Here at Sweet Baby Lou we like to hold our musical guests to a certain high caliber. Hence why were so disappointed when of all things, William Brennan canceled his reunion with us to…get an orange. From there he called in periodically informing us that he lost his bicycle and was arrested for owning an unregistered mule.

However the show was saved by an impromptu appearance by The Telephone Company and Pat Drew who reprised his guitar troubadour-ish-ness, fresh from tours throughout Southeast Asia where his latest album “Pat Drew Sings the Hits & Other Songs You Might Have Heard or At Least Vaguely Recall.”

However after receiving reinforcements, Will came through in the end. Honoring his gentlemen’s promise he came in the following week and walked us through some new material with influences that range from flamenco to Japanese pop.

LIVE INTERVIEWS WITH LIVING LEGENDS BUTTER 2 COMBO

Last week Sweet Baby Lou paid tribute to Amherst area rap group Butter 2 Combo. Some may remember Butter 2 Combo at their apex in the 90’s where they were some of the most prominent members of the Valley’s hip-hop community.

After flaming out in the middle of this decade, the group is reforming and releasing a much anticipated 8 CD box set, which features the groups entire collected works from the early “908 Chronicles” to late career masterpieces like “C.E.O. of Your Ass.”

Here in a series of interviews the group, including founding members Baron Hip, Captain Sketchy and Galactic C discuss their future, their past and the troubled, crack-filled road that has led the Combo to the present day.

Black Pharaohs Rise

BLACK PHARAOHS

Black Pharaohs rock out on Sweet Baby Lou

The Black Pharaohs and Sweet Baby Lou have a long mysterious history dating back to last year. Wherein as legend has it, the Pharaohs were trampling through the halls of the campus center (the beloved home of WMUA) one night in search of a place to practice their supreme jam-age. As fate would have it, Pete Rizzo one of the show’s DJ’s asked the lost travelers or their intentions and proposed that they one day rock out in the sacred halls of Sweet Baby Lou and his reverends.

Since then the Pharaohs have become the only Sweet Baby Lou band to ascend to walk-on status, saving the day for our “Valentines Day” show by magically appearing and showering us with their mighty prowess

Behold the fruits of this most mighty musical collaboration…
