40th Anniversary Spectacular: Part VI

MOTOWN MAN

Known by many people and by many names, Amherst’s own Motown Man (real name Benny Johnson) is a world-class street performer who can be found around the town showcasing his musical flair. Therefore when were planning our 40th episode, one that celebrated all that the Funk has had to offer over the years, we thought of no better returning guest than Mr. Motown.

Though we got much more than that, armed with a trusty sidekick nicknamed “House” for his penchant for eating one “out of house and home,” the duo collaborated on a few tunes adding harmonica and guitar parts to Benny’s freewheeling soulful voice and sidewalk percussion. The set quickly spiraled into jamboree with the Reverends of Funk chiming in on “Sittin’ On the Dock of the Bay” (a Motown staple) and “Shake It (Like a Bowl of Soup).”

Motown however not only brings the funk, but always an equally good cause. This time he was out in support of Veteran’s who have been abused by some of the area’s auto industry and he invites anyone who can assist him in his cause to contact him and aid in his pursuit of justice.

*Stayed tuned next week for a special funkumass presentation of “Cooking with Motown Benny” an insight into a virtuoso musician and master chef*
